English 1100 Research Essay
This assignment is designed to guide you through the process of researching, planning, writing,
and editing a research paper. Please choose one of the following topics to respond to.
1) Should colleges and universities provide students with greater mental health support? Why or
why not? If yes, how? If no, do you see alternatives?
2) Should John A Macdonald be publicly commemorated? Why or why not? If yes, how? If no,
do you see alternatives?
3) Should Canada provide greater supports for newcomers/immigrants? Why or why not? If yes,
how? If no, do you see alternatives?
These are broad topics, so feel free to narrow your focus. For example, if you write about
supports for newcomers you may want to focus on a particular area such as health or education,
and if you write on Macdonald you may want to choose to address statues or schools. Your
particular focus can be guided by your interests and research.
Each part below must be on the same topic. All parts should be formatted according to MLA
Guidelines, written in a scholarly tone, and carefully edited.
Part I: Annotated Bibliography
Weight: 10%
Due: November 6th, in-class
An annotated bibliography is a way of summarizing and evaluating research. Please choose four
scholarly sources (academic articles, historical documents, book chapters etc.) and provide a
properly formatted citation, a brief summery of key points in your own words (4-6 sentences),
and a brief evaluation that explains what you did or did not find useful (2-4 sentences). Your
annotation should be 1-2 paragraphs long.
Part II: Outline
Weight: 10%
Due: November 6th, in-class
Your outline can be linear or visual, but it must be typed, edited, and properly structured. Ensure
you have a clear and contentious thesis, that each body paragraph has a topic sentence and proper
evidence, and that your conclusion has a “so what?” Quoted and paraphrased evidence can be in
note form, but it must be properly cited according to MLA guidelines.
Part III: Essay
Weight: 20%
Due: December 4th, in-class
Your essay should be 4-6 pages double spaced and formatted according to MLA guidelines. It
should be guided by clear and contentious thesis, and supported by evidence and analysis.
Remember to stay on topic, to edit carefully, and to cite appropriately! This is your final
assignment, so be your best “scholarly self.”

Dickinson, Hugh. “The Reformation of Prince Hal.” Shakespeare Quarterly, 12.1 (1961): 33-46
In “The Reformation of Prince Hal” Hugh Dickinson argues that it is Prince Hal’s education that
is the most important theme of Henry V. Dickinson shows that reformation is a defining element
of the work, as many characters, including Falstaff, King Henry IV, and Hotspur, are also
attempting to redeem themselves. However, it is only Hal who succeeds in reforming himself,
and the others’ failed attempts make his success that much more noticeable. While the three other
men engage in rhetoric and detraction (against themselves, each other and Hal), the Prince shows
his character through action – not by insulting others. While Falstaff dismisses honour, and
Hotspur covets it, both men use it self-servingly. Hal, on the other hand, only really develops a
relationship with honour when he pursues something beyond himself – the protection of his
father. Dickinson argues that this action, and the fact that Hal’s honour stems from self-sacrifice,
proves that the Prince has achieved his reformation. Dickinson’s argument is complex and
somewhat difficult to follow, as it contains so many comparisons between different characters.
Despite this, its focus on characters other then Hal is useful, as Hal often gets looked at as a
separate entity. Dickinson does a good job of showing the foils within the play, and of making
the reader aware of how other characters’ failures add to the drama of Hal’s “big moment” of
reformation at the end.
