Current Events Assignment Information
The objectives of this assignment are:
to learn more about current events happening in today’s world,
to recognize the multiple impacts of current events,
to learn more about the geographic concept of scale,
to utilize geography’s integrative approach to help you better understand the
news, and
to improve your writing and research skills.
Your paper must include the following information:
1. A brief summary of the article. Where did the event occur? What happened? The
summary should be no longer than ½ a page.
2. Context of the event. (i.e. background information) Background information needs to
be relevant to the current event and should be no longer than ½ a page.
3. What are the social, economic, political, and environmental impacts of the event on
local, national, regional, and global scales? How do the impacts vary according to scale?
(Some current events might not be relevant to all types of impacts or impact all scales.
This is ok…but do your best to imagine the greatest range of actual or potential impacts.)
Use the worksheet on the last page of this handout to inspire you and help you to
organize your paper. This section should comprise the bulk of your paper. If you do not
explicitly describe different impacts and specify the type of impact or the scale of the
impact, you will not receive a passing grade on this assignment. This section should be
about 2 pages long.
4. Current event article citation (Author, title, source, date) and citations for other
sources of information that you used. You must have a works cited page and in-text
citations. (To complete this assignment you must back up your analysis by using at least
one additional source other than the current event article.)
5. Attach the full text of only the principal article that you used for your analysis or
include the full URL for your principal article.
Sources for current event articles:
Your article must come from a reputable source. If you have any doubt that your source
is reputable please ask the instructor or TA. The following is a partial list of reputable
sources. Many can be found on-line for free. The “Lexis-Nexis” search engine,
accessible through the Morris Library website, is an excellent way to find reputable news
articles from around the world.
New York Times http://news.bbc.co.uk/ http://www.msnbc.msn.com/
Chicago Tribune http://www.cnn.com/
Do not choose the same article as your friends in class. The analysis that you conduct
must be your own.

Submission: A digital copy of your assignment must be submitted to SIU Online
(http://online.siu.edu) by the start of class. Your assignment will be deducted 10 pts. for
each day that it is late (including weekends).
Mechanics:
Write about 3 pages.
Double-spaced
10-12 pt.
Arial or Times New Roman font
1 inch margins
Proof-read, proof-read, proofread!
Spelling and grammar matter
Do not copy your analysis
wording directly from the article;
put it in your own words.
Provide in-text and full works
cited references for all
information that you derived
from another source.
Do not use clichés
Do not use contractions
Article chosen must have been
published within 2 months of the
paper due date.
Bonus opportunity:
To improve your paper grade…stop by the office hours or make an appointment to meet
with a TA or the instructor in person to discuss your paper. Your paper will improve
with our input and you will earn a 5 pt. bonus on your paper grade. You do not need to
have a finished paper at the time of the meeting.
Evaluation Criteria:
Review the grading rubric available on SIU Online.
If poor grammar interferes with one’s ability to understand what you have written,
your content grade will suffer.
Only include what is necessary to the analysis…no more. This paper is very short so
there is no room for fluff. Your grade will suffer if you write more than 3 pages for
your analysis.
Answer all questions indicated on the project sheet.
Use of a secondary source is worth 5 pts. Yes, you are allowed to express your
perspective about your current event. However, you must back up your position with
valid information.

Worksheet for describing impacts of your current event
Describe examples of impacts of your current event according to the following scales of analysis & type of impact. You should be
able to think of examples for each geographic scale and at least half of the impact types.
