Out of the three major theoretical paradigms that are introduced in the book – realism, liberalism, and constructivism, the one that I believe would provide the most useful guidance in the event of alien contact is realism. I believe this theoretical paradigm would be the best option due to the text which states, “At the core of the realists paradigm is an emphasis on the study of war and peace over trade and domestic issues, combined with a belief that people are inherently and primarily motivated by self interest and the quest for security from, if not power over, their peers.” (PG.39) I believe that if we had made alien contact, the first question in both species minds would be, “How can I extort this to my advantage?” The assumptions that many books, films and comics make is that the aliens would prefer to rule or conquer our planet for their own needs, resources, and objectives. In almost every imaginary situation that involves aliens there is either a fight to conquer or destroy one of the two species or there is a common enemy that both species need to team up against in order to protect both species from a common threat or enemy.A realistic stand point would allow our species to ask hard questions that would follow logic in a sense to protect our species as well as our planet. The realistic view would allow us to think of multiple scenarios that could impact that fate of our species existence as well as the existence of our planet. In order to determine the cause for the contact with alien lifeforms we must realize the amount of potential our planet has for other species, such as resources, livable air space that allows us to create numerous structures for our pleasure, safety, and necessity. If we were to look at this subject from a liberal perspective we may think that we can adapt to having another species on our planet or we can cooperate with the aliens in order to take advantage of their technological advancements. There could be a negative effect if we were to go with this stance because if the alien species decided to exterminate the human race, the only options for humans would be to, “learn and adapt.” (PG.43)
