The Keirsey Temperament Sorter is an instrument used to identify personality types
through a seventy question personality evaluation quiz (Keirsey). According to Keirsey, four
temperaments describe human behavior which is then further subdivided into character types
each with its own unique set of four preferences. Each temperament explores the reasons why
people are so different and why people behave as they do. The four characters are namely; the
Guardian, the Artisan, the Rational, and the Idealist. The Guardian’s character types are
Supervisor, Inspector, Provider, and Protector. Within the Artisan temperament, one finds the
character types to be Promoter, Crafter, Performer, and Composer. For the Idealist, the character
types are Teacher, Counselor, Champion, and Healer. Lastly, the rational temperament offers the
Field marshal, Mastermind, Inventor, and Architect character classes. The Inventor is discussed
in this paper.
To understand the Inventor character type, one must first understand the temperament
under which it is. The Rationales are problem-solving individuals who are fascinated with the
way the world works making them ingenious, independent, realistic, skeptical and analytic
(Keirsey). They tend to seek knowledge and trust logic and facts, creating in them a yearning to
achieve goals and love technology. As a result, they try to find solutions that can be applied in
real life. The process of finding such solutions, creating connections between concepts, and
immensely fascinates them.
Inventors in lay terms can be described as people who come up with intellectual
contributions to make a new concept, process or device (Yale). Inventors can afford to remain
pragmatic when it comes to their ideas because if the ideas become a liability instead of an asset,
then the inventor should know that it is time to try something different (Key). Testing of ideas is
extremely crucial for inventors because it determines whether a new idea is feasible, workable
and sustainable. Focusing one major industry or interest ensures the quality of inventions since a
lot of experience and practice brings perfection (Key).
Inventors have four unique preferences to their character type. The first is that they favor
extroversion to introversion. They are passionate individuals, and this is because they seek for
people to understand their inventions, which requires expressing their thoughts and processes.
Inventors are intuiting which they mean, their work achievements, and their goals. Additionally,
inventors are tough-minded individuals, and therefore they make excellent strategists, work
tirelessly and can endure long involving projects (Keirsey). Their proclivity towards knowledge
makes them curious and probing characters who perceive situations and experience they receive
analytically and skeptically.
As an inventor, I can identify problems around me faster than others and apply critical
thinking skills to find applicable solutions. Having this trait means I am prone to be quite
observant to notice such issues. Being able to find working solutions to problems provides
feelings of achievement, satisfaction, and euphoria. Sometimes, I am described by people as a
perfectionist and a pessimist who is always trying to find something wrong in the situation so
that I can have the chance to fix it. To a point, I may agree because the search for solutions gets
me going.
Socially, I have no issue making friends as I am extroverted. However, some of my
relationships with friends and family suffer because it seems that I am only interested in
discussing my preferred topics which always involve creating new things. To them, it may
appear that I am always in some utopia. Introspectively, I realize I have no emotional extremes. I
am almost always even-tempered regardless of whatever what happens because the display of
intense emotion is not always necessary. This goes a long way in making sure I do not
exaggerate feelings. Being rational means that I have to evaluate all the advantages and
disadvantages of every situation and decision made. In my opinion, risk-taking is a dangerous
venture to pursue.
As a student, I prefer schedules that are not too strict or regular. Invention goes hand in
hand with creativity which requires a degree of open-mindedness and an allowance to test and
develop ideas. I tend to avoid leadership positions because of they are too emotionally involved
and time-consuming. As far as my self-evaluation goes, this temperament accurately describes
my personality because I recognize many of the character types in myself as the things I do every
day. My personality largely influences my decisions, ways of life and relationships with others.
Learning about my temperament in specific has allowed me to know myself better
especially when it comes to strengths and weaknesses. Knowledge about the other kinds of
temperaments has enabled me to evaluate behaviors and personalities of other people to know
the reasons behind their actions and thought processes. It has made me know what personality
types are most compatible with mine to understand past fall outs and avoid future
misunderstandings. Understanding people’s strengths and weaknesses have proved to be very
informative and resourceful.

A talent in this particular context is a positive attribute; that is, a desirable characteristic,
ability or skill that one possesses which makes him or her unique in his way. A person may
possess many strengths which often interact to make the person able to carve out a niche for
themselves. It is possible for a person to utilize and maximize all their strengths. However, some
may just focus on a few major ones. Some skills may come effortlessly while others need to be
cultivated and practiced time and time again. Therefore, it is right to say that even if two people
possess the same talents or strengths, they will not exhibit the same characteristics. Nature and
nurture are important factors when it comes to determining how a person may use their skills.
We are all a result of the environment around us and so different ways or methods of upbringing
and what situations or circumstances we are exposed to may influence how we use our talents,
for what purpose and to what ends. This essay describes some strengths, their co-relation, and
practical applicability.
The first strength is being futuristic. Someone who is futuristic can be defined as a
dreamer; an individual who sees visions of what could happen in the future (The Gallup
Organization). This is the person who can foresee future situations and plan for them. Dreamers
are visionaries, and they can create goals and inspire people to work towards them even if they
Name 2
seem a tad unrealistic. They can create hope and motivation to people. They are also able to see
identify opportunities way before other people have noticed them and because of this, they are
exceptional assets.
Second is adaptability. This can be described as a quality that allows one to live in the
present, have a vision for the future but still be able to deal with detours (The Gallup
Organization). Being able to adapt means that you are ready and equipped for whatever situation
that arises and in that case challenges, roadblocks, and detours are welcome, expected, and
approached with a positive and winning attitude. Adaptability allows an individual to be well
prepared for any eventuality and have an open mind. It also requires flexibility; the ability of that
person to welcome sudden changes and deal with them accordingly. A flexible person can make
their plans but still accept change if they do not produce the intended results.
Other individuals may be private, reserved, cautious and careful (The Gallup
Organization). Such are the qualities that come with being deliberative. Persons who possess this
strength tend to be aware of the risks in life and instead of completely ignoring and avoiding
them, they tackle them one by one. This is done by first identifying and assessing the risks to
know which is which and what threats they pose. Once this information is acquired, they find
ways to mitigate and reduce the risks. Deliberative people are careful about everything they say
and do everything slowly, purposefully and in order.
There is nothing wide of the mark with wanting to stand out and above everyone. To be
recognized, accepted, and heard by people are qualities of wanting to be significant (The Gallup
Organization). Most leaders want people to know that they possess unique abilities and want to
be accredited to them. They also prefer to be associated with individuals who are significant and
Name 3
push their friends to be the same. Such individuals are aggressive when it comes to achieving
goals and qualifications, and they never stop looking towards gaining more success.
The last strength is ideation. This power proves to be one of the most creative and
resourceful of all talents. A person who is full of ideas can be described as a think tank; one that
lights up with new concepts, new methods, new ways of connecting already existing concepts,
and new applications (The Gallup Organization). Ideation goes hand in hand with innovation
which is the ability to introduce something new that is usually contrary to established methods or
contrary to what people are used. It, however, requires more than just creativity to put a good
idea to use.
All these strengths are inter-connected and have to work together to produce ideal results.
From all the descriptions and definitions, it is clear that the most common factor in all the talents
is the ability to foresee and plan. The main strength is being futuristic, and the other four work
together and interact with each other to make the future possible. Being futuristic sets the goals
or vision to be achieved. Being adaptable allows the individual to deal with changes along the
way, being deliberative makes the different cautious regarding planning and helps mitigate risks,
the desire to be important sets the person apart from others and lastly ideation provides the
means to achieve the future visualized. Each talent, therefore, brings a unique skill or capability
to the table.
In conclusion, the individual can, if able to hone all the skills, realize a better quality of
life and success in the workplace or even in the classroom. Being able to set goals at the
workplace or in career life even up to and including retirement means that one is looking toward
and planning for the future. Whatever happens, even if the person loses the job, the goals still
Name 4
stand, and the person is still able to achieve them in the end by putting to use ideation,
deliberativeness and most importantly adaptability because things do not always go as planned.
In the end, whatever variable or circumstances one is provided with, these talents remain
constant and available for use.
