Expert answer:Job Description for a Human Services Manager

Expert answer:An interview was conducted with a human service professional. Using knowledge gained from that experience, and any additional research you conduct, write an original, detailed job description for a manager or supervisor in a specific human service agency of your choosing. You can choose a human service setting where you have already been employed, one where you would like to be employed in the future or one that is related to the social problem you have chosen for my final project which is Mental Health. Please do not copy an existing job description from the Internet.Examples of agencies include counseling centers, Department of Child and Family Services, faith-based organizations, homeless shelters, rehabilitation centers, hospice agencies, women’s shelters, senior housing facilities, adoption agencies and prison settings. You may choose a human service setting that is not included in this list. For the assignment, be sure to include:The type of agency where the manager will work.A description of the specific duties and tasks required for a manager in this setting.A description of the specific skills needed for a manager in this setting.A description of the educational and certification or licensure requirements for that position.

Running Head: HUMAN SERVICE PROFESSION
Interviewee: Beverly Roper, Social Service director at Independent community Living
Date: 11/13/2017
From the interview, I learnt that the interviewee had worked for many years as a social
worker and had gathered enough experience that enabled her to overcome the challenges which
she faced as she handled people. On the other hand, she stated that she had with the agency for
three years and had observed the changes taking place in the tastes and preferences for the needs
of the clients. According to the interviewee, they offer services related to assisting to the less
fortunate in the society and those that have gone through effects that have made their lives turn
out in a way that they did not expect (Bratiotis, Schmalisch & Steketee, 2011). As a result, the
services offered range from those who need special care and those who need assistance since
they cannot have the necessary needs for example.
The agency which the interviewee serves consists of the society as a whole so that the
ages of the beneficiaries range from 18 to 50 years. The interviewee also explained that at times
the agency has to go out of its way and serve others who do not fall in the age bracket. However,
human service has become hard since some people feel that they have the right to more than they
receive. In such cases, they tend to argue with the staff members but dealing with them becomes
easy when they are reminded of their need for services in the future (Burger, 2011). On the other
hand, the security staffs have the task of handling arguments in a fair and polite way. The
interviewee stated that at times she has to work longer and deny herself personal time. However,
she has recognized the need to spend all her free time with her family and friends so that she
regains her energy after working for a long period of time.

Beverly stated that at one point the employees might become stressed and has less energy
since they offer many services. At this time, she offers the employees motivation through
delivering some cold or hot drinks and interacting with them so that they share the hard times
that they go through. Also, unethical situations arise from performing the various duties and roles
in the agency. However, Beverly stated that the agency has a code of ethics that people should
follow as they perform their daily responsibilities (Nash, 2002). As a result, when the customers
become unethical, it is easy to get them back to act on the ethical requirements. Handling cases
suspected to fall under child abuse at times may become hard, but through the skills and
professions that people have gained through learning, it becomes possible to handle the cases
with effectiveness to ensure that justice is administered correctly.
Beverly also stated that her weakness is handling the old who suffer from neglect by their
families. At times, she said it became hard to hold emotions after seeing some of the challenges
that people face in life. However, she also stated that working under pressure is something that
every person should have a way of handling as it will come once in a while. For her, she stated
that she remains focused and determined to efficiently complete the tasks that add pressure to her
roles. The interviewee noted that some of the services offered include counseling, Housing and
provision of basic needs to the affected in the society (Bratiotis, Schmalisch & Steketee, 2011).
However, to become a social worker, one must have qualifications ranging from diplomas to
degrees from recognized universities. Therefore, the task requires one to have the skills and
qualifications that will enable him or her to handle the customers regardless of their demands.
Based on the responses delivered by the interviewee, it was clear that the course offers
guidelines on how to succeed as a social worker despite the challenges presented. For example,
handling employees who become exhausted and customers who become argumentative will lead

to the development of leadership skills that will avoid the chaos in an organization (Burger,
2011). Also, working under pressure and balancing between personal life and the job requires
commitment.
