METR 112 Global Climate Change
Homework 5
Watch the following video segments, read the article, and answer the questions in
complete sentences and short paragraphs. There are about 1.5 hours of video content, and
it will probably take ½ hour to read the article.
Watch the Earth Under Water video: (45 minutes)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Y7CG-dAeRI
I hope you find it interesting to think through the consequences of unmitigated sea level
rise, and perhaps you recognize some of the characters from in-class videos.
Question 1. What is likely to be the major industry on Earth in 2100 if the worst sea level
rise scenario materializes? Does it make sense to build an economy in this manner? Does
this represent innovation of new products and services designed to enhance the human
experience, or will we just be scrambling to save our lives?
Question 2. Do crop growing regions need to be underwater in order to be rendered
unusable by sea level rise?
Question 3. Can all coastal cities be saved, or will some need to be abandoned? Do you
feel that our governing institutions are sufficiently robust and rational to make fair
choices regarding which cities to save, who will clean up those that are abandoned, and
how to manage the ensuing geopolitical disruption?
Now that we see clearly that the outcomes described in Earth Under Water are so horrific
that they simply cannot be allowed to happen, are there other choices?
Watch Prof. David Keith’s TED talk on Geoengineering, (16 minutes)
followed by a short interview on Hard Talk (24 minutes)
Question 4. Briefly summarize the basic arguments for and against geoengineering.
Question 5. Identify the two basic geoengineering approaches Keith discusses (hint, one
involves addition, one involves removal).
Question 6. Is geoengineering, as envisioned by Keith, a permanent solution, allowing
unrestricted GHG emissions, or a stopgap measure to reduce risks associated with worstcase scenarios while we find ways to reduce CO2 emissions?
Read the following article from Mother Jones, Did California Figure Out How to Fix
Global Warming? http://www.motherjones.com/environment/2016/03/california-cutsgreenhouse-gas-jerry-brown-growth-energy/
Question 7. Describe how the economic prospects for largely uneducated, low wage
workers living in the oil producing region of the southern CA central valley are being
impacted by the transition to renewable energy. Is there more money in oil or
renewables?
Question 8. Have California’s achievements on efficiency and renewable energy been
due to exclusively democratic, exclusively republican, or substantially bipartisan
leadership? Provide an example of a republican hiring a democrat because “she was quite
simply the best person for the job”.
Question 9. Who “largely created the market for zero-emission vehicles”? While the idea
of electric cars seemed almost unthinkable just a couple of decades ago, how does the
future look now?
Question 10. This homework assignment has explored three different approaches to
dealing with the consequences of climate change. Identify which video or article
described which approach. With all three of these approaches, are the major hurdles
primarily technical in nature, or do they mostly involve governance? Given the potential
benefits and drawbacks of each of the three approaches, which do you support?
