Introduction
In “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe, the reader is taken on a literary journey to a
tribe in Nigeria known as the Igbo to experience first-hand, the problems encountered by the
main character, Okonkwo. Okonkwo is the protagonist of the novel and one of the most
influential men in the Igbo tribe who usually resorted to violence to make his points clear.
Although deep down his heart he was not a cruel man, his life is dominated by his internal
conflict, the fear of weakness and failure.
Single Character Analysis
Chinua Achebe registers the living ways of the Igbo tribe in Nigeria as it recounts to one
kinsman, Okonkwo. His personality is that of a man completely dedicated and committed to the
beliefs and customs of his people. In the entire writing, the author provides distinguishing
portrays of the conventional life that Okonkwo lived in Umoufia (Achebe, 2000). He illustrates
the daily practices of the people in this township and the significant portion of the rites they
practiced starting the first week to the last that involved wrestling. The belief in the traditions
held Okonkwo, and the people of Umoufia organized. Customs and the rituals of the Umoufia
are used to define the major subject of Chinua Achebe’s work, to create the atmosphere of the
novel, and to illustrate the inspiration of the characters.
A major issue that arises concerning the novel is if Okonkwo functions as a believer of
the appraisals of his people or stands in discord with Umuofia. This controversy emerges on the
action of Okonkwo’s responsibility in the death of the child, Ikemefuna. A large number of the
scholars argue that Okonkwo was wrong and clashed with his people when he had to be involved
in the murdering of the child. However, there are those that suggest that he intended to meet the
demands of the Oracle of the Hills and Caves. In whatever manner to view it, “Things Fall

Apart” gives a wide disbursement of denotations, symbols, and provocations. The prevalent
theme appears to be that of the impact of colonialism on an intelligible Igbo community and
Okonkwo, the primary character. Just like the rest of the historic courses, these happenings do
not portray themselves as generalizations but as the faintly changed behavior of specific persons
and communities with time.
Evaluations with some of the optimum heartbreaks of the fictional custom are not lost.
The act of Okonkwo committing suicide reminds us of the infinite existential abyss that all
pronounced disasters entreat and challenge us to overcome. The real misfortune, we are retold,
is in the acts of humanity. It would be unfair to overemphasize how significant “Things Fall
Apart” is for present African literacy (Bloom, 2010). However, just like a majority of the
literature at the root of literary customs, its accomplishments are simple to oversee since it
created a set of resolutions and made them appear normal.
Conclusion
Things Fall Apart is an interesting book that reveals the annihilation of an individual and
place of residence in Nigeria. It is a depiction of the unbending ambiance, as portrayed by
Okonkwo, and reveals how that ambiance may be destroyed by unwanted people who destroy
the most important rights of any individuals. The author has successfully and significantly
illustrated the destruction of a person’s personality, portrayed as a result of colonization,
Westernization, and the introduction of Christianity, and the finality of tribal beliefs and
customs.
