Case Study Report
General Guidelines:
Students will submit a 750 to 1,000 word, double spaced, computer generated report on a case based
on criteria outlined in this hand-out. A cover page and a references page must also be included in the
report. You must have at least 2 separate sources for your report – not including the documentary link.
Although this is not a formal research paper, students will be responsible for identifying all of their
sources throughout the report and in the references section in APA style. Issues of plagiarism will be
strictly enforced. Failure to cite your sources throughout your report means you have plagiarized the
material! You must also submit your assignment online through Turn It In.
Students must choose a case study that relates to one of the topic areas discussed in the weekly
modules. It is the student’s responsibility to confirm the appropriateness of their subject matter with
the instructor by week 5 (see last page).
Content Guidelines:
Background/Introduction – 100-150 words
Students must introduce their topic at the beginning of the report by providing the necessary
background information that gives the teacher a clear understanding of what the report is about.
Information that captures the teacher’s attention and inspires them to read further are two guiding
principles to use in your introduction. Important statistics, historical background and putting a human
face to the topic are good ways to introduce your subject matter. The impacts on society or the human
cost related to your topic are also ways that “grab” the teacher’s attention.
In your introduction you must also state what the question is that you will be attempting to answer or
what it is you are trying to prove.
Critique – 500-700 words
The body of your report is where you present the main facts/evidence of your case study. This is similar
to the way a crown attorney or a defence attorney would present the evidence to support his/her case.
Everything presented must relate to what it is that you are trying to prove or the question it is that you
are trying to answer.
Conclusion – 100-150 words
When concluding your report go over some of the key facts of the report and tie them into any
conclusions you came to about your specific topic. Listing recommendations in how to deal with your
subject matter or how to prevent further similar events from occurring are approaches you may wish to
include here. You may also choose to highlight what worked in cases or events that had a successful
conclusion.
A strong finish is important, as this will be the last chance to convince the teacher as to the value of the
topic and why the information you have been presenting throughout your report is crucial for
understanding your chosen subject!
Students must choose one of the following options for their case study:
•
Option A – an actual real life case related to a youth topic.
OR
•
Option B – a fictional case based on a movie or a book related to a youth topic.
Some Ideas for Option A:
1. Research the case: Ishmael Bhea—a child soldier. Discuss the rehabilitation of violent youth to
prove the point that rehabilitation for even the most violent offenders is the best approach for
society. Try these as a start: Unicef Canada Web site / The Romeo Dallaire Child Soldiers
Initiative
2. Research the case: Ashley Smith– a woman that started into the criminal justice system as a
youth. Discuss the topic of mental health issues versus criminality and answer the question as
to how society failed a woman who suffered from mental health issues was treated as a
criminal. Try these as a start: BC-Ashley Smith coroner’s jury rules prison death a homicide /
National Post-Ashley Smith death ruled a homicide by inquest jury
3. Watch and research: http://www.cbc.ca/fifth/episodes/2010-2011/the-life-and-death-ofabdinasir-dirie Case: Abdinsir Dirie. Discuss the importance of mentors in lives of young people
including how where youth live, their associates and friends affect future criminal activity using
research and your notes.
4. Watch and research: http://www.cbc.ca/fifth/episodes/2016-2017/cross-lake-this-is-where-ilive Case: Cross Lake Indigenous Community. Discuss the importance of community members
trained in mental health and addictions in order to work with youth living in at risk communities
using research and your notes.
5. Watch and research: http://www.cbc.ca/fifth/episodes/2014-2015/too-young-to-lose Case: Too
Young To Lose. Discuss the importance of working with a team of others in the community to
prevent youth crime, victimization and exploitation using research and your notes.
Some Ideas for Option B:
1. Watch Boyz n The Hood: Focus on Trey Styles and discuss the importance of fathers in lives of
young men and prove the point that it is crucial for a boy to have a positive relationship with his
father. Include ramifications of not having this relationship backed up by supporting research
and data. Try searching: David Popenoe “Life Without Father” / Psychology Today-Father
Absence, Father Deficit, Father Hunger
2. Watch Divergent: Focus on Tris and discuss the importance of supporting youth in life decisions.
Consider what the ramifications are when youth are not provided with adult support as they
make the transition into adulthood. Try searching: Hewlitt Clark “Transition of Youth and Young
Adults with Emotional or Behavioral Difficulties” / Patricia Hoolihan “Launching Your Teen
Into Adulthood”
3. Watch Girl Interrupted: Focus on Susanna Kaysen and her stay at a mental institution and how
the system treats those with mental health issues. Include issues like stigma and how Hollywood
portrays those with a mental illness.
Assignment Check List:
1. Does your assignment focus on a particular “case” and a topic that relates to youth issues?
2. Did you argue a point/theory or try to answer a question?
3. Did you back up your assignment with at least two other credible/factual sources? (Do not use
Wikipedia and do not include the movie link as one of your two other sources)
4. Do you have a cover page with your name, student number, title and the instructor’s name included?
5. Do you have a references page at the end of your report?
6. Is your report 750-1,000 words in length (not including the cover page and references page)?
7. Did you source your information throughout your report in APA style?
8. Is your report typewritten (calabri font 11 or times new roman font 12) and double spaced with one
inch margins and page numbers and secured with a staple in the top left corner?
9. Did you proofread your report for correct grammar and spelling?
