Background:
The Mississippi River is a major resource in the United States. Recognizing the location of the river and
its major tributaries is an important component to appreciating the significance of its cultural and physical
geography.

Directions:
1) Use the attached map to locate and label the following geographic components of the Mississippi
River. These must be labelled by your hand, no computer labels are acceptable.
a) The drainage divide that defines the Mississippi River basin (outline the river’s watershed)
b) Arkansas River
c) Mississippi River
d) Missouri River
e) Ohio River
f) Tennessee River
2) Use the attached map to also locate and label the following geographic components of the Red River
that forms the border between the states of North Dakota and Minnesota. These must be labelled by
your hand, no computer labels are acceptable.
a) The drainage divide that defines the Red River basin (sometimes referred to as the Red River
of the North)
b) Red River
Label all these features by your hand directly on the map—do NOT use numbers or other symbols to identify
the river locations. Good cartography requires that you write the name directly adjacent to the river.
You may use symbols to identify the two different watershed boundaries.
