Rhetorical Analysis for Zach Brooke’s
“Human Relationships Strengthen Supply Chains”
Introduction
When asking someone’s comments about an article, most of them usually use words
“Good” or “Bad” to answer it. But none of them can explain why they think the article is good or
bad specifically, because many people do not really know how to utilize their rhetorical analyze
with critical thinking during reading or writing the article. Rhetorical writing is a fundamental
tool to help author to set up a logical structure, and contribute a helpful and effective article to
readers. A high-quality article or blog should identify specific rhetorical situation which are
author, purpose, audience, text and context first. After that, utilizing and combining the rhetorical
strategies and appeals smartly can make the article more outstanding. Any articles you saw with
strong, consistent and persuasive enough must have an author who mastered on using rhetorical
in writing.
This paper analyzes how rhetorical strategies and appeals are used in Zach Brooke’s
article on the ‘AMA’ magazine. The intended audience is the people who work in marketing and
supply chain’s field. The purpose of this article is to show how important the establishment of a
relationship between the buyer and seller is in the creation of an effective and efficient supply
chain. It focuses on the findings of a report from research conducted by the National Centre for
the Middle Market. Zach Brooke has been a prolific business writer working with the AMA as a
staff-writer where he writes articles for their magazine and as well writes e-newsletters. In
“Human Relationships Strengthen Supply Chains,” Brooke makes practical use of his vast
knowledge in the field of business; quoting statements made by other key players in the industry,
and previously learned experiences from supply chains to show how significant human
relationships are in establishing effective and long-term supply chains.
This essay analyzes the rhetorical strategies exemplified in the article, and how these
strategies help the author to achieve the purpose. Also, the paper will emphasize the rhetorical
appeals Ethos and Logos that the author used in the article which have a significant effect on the
article.
Ethos
Ethos is a strategy that is used by many regarding persuading someone of a person’s
character and credibility. Writers use it as a tool of convincing their readers of their credibility
regarding the specific matters they are addressing so that the readers can have confidence in the
information they are reading. The writer’s introductory phase entails the analysis of a report that
was detailed in a very substantive manner, which was carried out by the National Center for the
Middle Market. This works to convince the reader of the accuracy and relevance of the report,
that the writer has not just written what is on his mind but has analyzed facts and research carried
out by credible institutions. The writer’s credibility is thus affirmed by the reader who can now
rely on the information that has been written. In addition, by directly quoting the words of
several professionals affiliated with the field, the writer has established his credibility as a
scholar and thus birthed a confidence in the readers of the article. The reader is made aware of
the professional opinion of the various individuals quoted, who are affiliated to the field and thus
gains confidence in the writer’s article. The intricate factual details provided by the writer of the
article also work towards convincing the reader of the credibility and character of the writer so
that they can rely on the information that he has posted.
1
Logos
Logos is one of the most common appeals that an author can use in an analytic or
informative article as he tries to use facts or credible case study to make sufficient support for
their main idea. As he uses his analogy of the iPhone 6’s supply chain, Brooke is appealing to
logos, because the logical appeal can fully support the author’s main idea and help achieve the
intended purpose. The statistics, as well as graphs provided by the author, have worked towards
appealing to the logos of the reader since they provide factual information as well as an elaborate
analysis that details the relationship of the human aspect in strengthening the supply chain. In the
article, the author not only interviewed one specific person, but also some other people who
worked in this field for many years. There is a logistics professor of the supply chain, the
services leader and some references from other relevant reports. We can see different point of
views in the article, and all these ideas are trying to support the author’s purpose. Moreover, the
author provides the statistics of 40% of successful middle market companies which concentrate
more on strengthening their relationship with existing partnerships rather than absorb more new
customers. Analogy is a tool that can be used by writers to help them come to a conclusion on
their own. The persuasive power of analogy stems from the fact that the audience will arrive at
the intended conclusion on their own, thus gaining a thorough understanding of the article.
Primarily, this tool uses comparison for the purpose of clarification and explanation. Zack
Brooke, in his article, has used analogy in several instances. For instance, he compares the
supply chain of iPhones and food items, which helps the reader envision the point being
addressed and thus see the bigger picture being portrayed. This has worked in enhancing the
explanation of the main point he addresses in the article thus enhancing the understanding of his
readers
Exemplification
Exemplification is a strategy that helps the author to have effective support for his main
idea and thesis statements. Significantly, Brooke also makes use of analogies and figurative
language in his writing to bring out his points. As he tries to explain how many companies have
foregone the importance of creating relationships, Brooke uses the iPhone 6 which has a very
long supply chain scenario. The picture shows how many countries are involved in the iphone6’s
chain, and how much Apple Company will spend if the iPhone 6 is completely made in the USA.
This can be a convictiving way to help the author explain how humongous and time-consuming
such a process can be without the right kind of working relationship with the parent organization,
Apple. Also, he talks about how the students at Ohio State University try to map a company’s
supply chain. The students found out that even a pizza shop can have hundreds of suppliers, and
a simple thing can have a complicated supply chain as the iphone6’s supply. Brooke’s purpose of
using such an example is to show how important it is easy to work not just as business
counterparts but as individuals with a mutual and personal relationship. The intuitionistic graphs
and the examples he provides can be the most effective exemplifications when the author tries to
prove his point, and let audiences have a better understanding of the purpose.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Brooke facilitates the Ethos, logical appeals and exemplification strategy
in the article to make the article more persuasive. The exemplification he used is sufficient and
2
successfully to prove his point in the article. He provides detailed information and as well
borrows from other individuals’ views to show that it is the best approach to ensuring the
effectiveness of a particular supply chain at any given time. The analogies and figurative he used
to make absorb the audience focus, and make a strong evidence to prove his idea. In addition, he
uses other examples to control the idea. For example, he uses how to make an iphone 6 and how
to make pizza to have help explain simply contrasted and the relationship between them. In the
course of the article, Brooke uses rhetorical tools effectively demonstrating his skill as an
experienced writer and manages to create an influential atmosphere into trying to incorporate the
human element in modern-day supply chain systems. This logical appeal contributes more to
convincing the reader, and makes the audiences understand the point that author wants to prove.
Moreover, the Ethos appeal he used in the article help him make the article become more
persuasive and credible. The author use interview and quote the authorities like professor and the
leader in this field to help him support his point of view, and make the article more trustworthy.
In this article, he also uses the narration strategy to make a substantial argument to the
reason why the creation of human relationships is imperative for a supply chain. However, he did
not bring the aspect of cause and effect out substantially, and I think he should make it more
specific. The author should be specific in the sense that he addresses the effects that a worse
relationship with the suppliers, as well as contrasts this with the effects of a good relationship
with suppliers. In my opinion, if he wants to make the article more attractive, he should describe
or quote more about the opposite aspects.
Before I wrote this Rhetorical paper, I have no idea about how to analyze an article and
how to write an effective article to the audience. While writing this paper, I read the article again
and again and did tonnes of research on what entails the rhetorical aspect of literature. After
reading another writers article, I gained a clearer picture regarding how to use the rhetorical
strategies and appeals smartly under the correct rhetorical situation when writing an excellent
article or paper. I believe I will gain more when I do more studies on it and become a better
writer.
