PLEASE FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS VERY CAREFULLY
Instructions:
This activity is Step 2 of your Paper 3. In this step you will go out into the field site of social
context you chose in step 1 and observe how gender is socially constructed in that site.
Your site MUST be:
1.
2.
3.
4.
A place that you can observe gender
A place that you can re-visit
An identifiable context in which human interaction regularly occurs
A place where you can reasonably expect to find some interesting and identifiable
aspects of gender
5. A place where you will be able to observe people interacting for an extended period of
time
Also
• You may not write about your own home or dorm, but almost anywhere else is fair game.
• I encourage you to select a location that you are not overly familiar with.
• Please consult with me if you need help identifying a suitable place for your study
Time considerations:
1. Plan on being in this place for a minimum of three hours, split into at least two different
days (i.e., minimally you will spend 1.5 hours in this location twice, or one hour three
times).
2. You may find you need to spend more time there than the minimum in order to get
something interesting for your paper.
3. Please note that “minimum” here means the least amount of work or effort needed
to earn a passing grade; an “A” paper will require more effort than this.
OBSERVATIONS GUIDELINE
PLEASE FOLLOW THIS GUIDELINE VERY CAREFULLY
On your visit(s), try to pay attention to everything you see. Take notes about:
1. The context and setting eg:
i. What is the name of the site?
ii. Where is it? (state the exact location and full address)
iii. What is this place what happens there or what do people do there?

this place?
8. Make a list of the events you observe and try to get a sense of how they differ from each
other (for example, how are events gendered and/or resources distributed there?).
Note: In some cases, this will be easier than in others and you may also need to consult
with someone who is regularly at this place about how gender affects the interactions
that occur there. On a subsequent visit, try to focus on observing key events and take
good notes on them.
You will use your notes and memory to write your paper.
Your paper must have an introduction, body paragraphs and a conclusion

SOCIAL CONSTRUCTION OF GENDER IN SHOPPING MALL
Word Count = 1056
Social Construction of Gender
In the study of sociology, gender is referred to us as feminine or masculine. It is the difference
between a man and a woman. The gender term also applies to the cultural gap between the female
and male. I want to observe the gender interaction in one of the malls, in the United States of
America. I want to distinguish their different way of interaction in this particular mall.
1. The context and setting e.g.: i. what is the name of the site? ii. Where is it? (State the exact
location and full address) iii. What is this place what happens there or what do people do there?
iv. What day and time did you visit the place, how long were you there.
The place I want to base my observation on the gender construction would be at the Tysons
corner Centre. It is a massive mall that is about 100 of stores and eatery, plus a cinema and various
elevated plaza. The address of the mall is 1961 Chain Bridge Road, Virginia USA and the accurate
time for opening the premises is from 10 am to 9.30 pm. The resident in Virginia calls the mall as
the next American great city, and it started as a small rural crossroad and grown to become the
business hub. The mall has various spaces for offices where business people start their firm. Tyson
mall has best shopping center where individuals and families go to buy stuff and also a restaurant
where couples go for romantic dinner. I went to the mall on Friday date 17th Nov for only 2 hours
and even on Saturday date 18th Nov for an hour.
2. How is it set up?
The mall has different sections, where it has got the restaurant, shopping sections, and
parking lot, baby changing station, office spaces and also Auto wash. People can do many things
under one roof. The building is a suitable structure with a two-climbing escalator heading upstairs.
Next, to the elevator, there are advertising posters. At the center of the second floor, there is a
phone display where people view the new phones. The mall has a big store selling Rolex watches
which are displayed from the inside, and one of the corridors has a display of original vacuum
machines for sale.
3. Who is there?
The mall has numerous individuals who are going about doing their businesses. While
sitting at the entrance, I observed different kind of nationalities specially Arabs entering the Tysons
mall from all corners. They are some who came in walking, Metro, riding bicycles, some with
taxis and others driving. Mostly women are the ones coming in than male and children. They are
young women with their children and some walking with a man and others walking alone.
According to my observation, most people who were there were females.
4. What sorts of interactions do they have?
The type of interaction I view in this mall is between the males and females that hold hands while
walking and others just walk side by side conversing. The mall has various shops that are selling
different products like shoes, watches, clothes and also AMC Movie Theater. There is an
interaction between the shopping attendants and their clients which are showing their products to
them.
5. The gendered nature of what you observe (e.g. what do men do? What do women do?)
When I was walking around the mall staring at the people and observing what they are doing, I see
a male taking a picture. Other men are walking up and down window shopping and also sitting
down with either their wives or daughters. I observe a man in a suit walking down the escalator
carrying a plastic bottle of water. There is music playing just next to the shoe shop, and a woman
is dancing like the moving image on the screen as others cheer.
6. Who speaks to whom? Are heterosexual/homosexual interactions long or short? Loud or quiet?
Do they include touching? Who touches whom? etc.)
They are many people who are talking to each other at the mall. At the farther end of the shopping
center, I see an Asian male and female having a conversation. The conversation goes for about 20
minutes before they start to walk toward the exit of the mall. The two have their discussion loudly
because of the loud noise and people passing. The female partner holds the male by his shoulder
as they walk away.
7. What sorts of interactions or speech events are the most interesting or important for this place?
The mall has a big restaurant and a bar filled with staffs. The interaction mostly is witnessed
between the customers and the staff members, though the new technology of using the screen may
limit the interactions. The utilization of the digital key may eliminate the need for human
interaction. The mall offers entertaining activities that are essential to the customers. The event
involves participation by children, females, and males. The Tysons center provides summer
concert that brings various people around the United States and the world.
8. Make a list of the events you observe and try to get a sense of how they differ from each other
(for example, how are events gendered and/or resources distributed there?).
These are the list of events I have observed in the Tysons mall for the two days have been here. It
includes; a man was singing at the entrance of the mall, a lady dancing alone while others watch,
there were a concert and an invitation of a prominent musician. Both females and males are at the
concert dancing and shouting. Movie stars and their directors are using the premises to film
consisting of both men and women who are equally participating.
In conclusion, the interaction between the female and male is frequent, and one cannot
pass three or four people before meeting a couple or friends speaking to each other loudly or
quietly. The customers are the ones who interact most with the business owners especially females
because they tend to love shopping more. Tysons mall is a center of tourist attraction and it brings
different people from different cultures and nationalities which can affect gender equality.
