Topic: The Religious Theme Seen in the Baroque and Renaissance Artworks.
The two artworks that would be focused in the final paper would be The Last Supper
painting which was done in the Renaissance period and the crucifixion of saint peter done in the
Baroque period. Both had a religious theme derived from the Biblical context. This theme was
integrated into the Christian Art and it was mostly commissioned by the Catholic Church.
The Last Supper was done by Leonardo Da Vinci in1495-98. It was one of the best
Christian Art murals painted during the Renaissance period (Paoletti, & Radke, 2005). Leonardo
was well known for his human realism style. Its message was depicted from the Gospel of John
13:21. The piece was composed of elements with symbolism; it had dramatic effects by the
incorporation of shadows and perspective. The medium used was Tempera and oil on gesso. The
scale of these painting was 15 feet by 29 feet.
On the other hand, the Crucifixion of Saint Peter was done in 1601 by Caravaggio. He
was well known for his naturalistic style of painting which had some form of mannerism. In this
painting, Peter was crucified upside down which is the most interesting bit. It was an oil painting
done on a scale of 230cm by 175cm. Its technique was composed chiaroscuro that is the use of
shadows in contrasting light to achieve a 3D effect. Caravaggio also managed to create a
dramatic effect using his style Caravaggism (Sciberras, & Stone, 2006). This was an intense use
of deep shadows using dark colors also known as tenebrism. The two artworks give answers to;
the medium used for the paintings, the technique and theme as well as by which artists.
These two artworks reveal that the Christian art was highly endowed because it signified
the importance of the Biblical teachings. These images were mostly painted in the Roman and
Italian churches which instilled peace and united the Christians. The interdisciplinary approach

of this project will focus on the historical and social aspects portrayed by the artworks. It will
also illustrate more on the techniques used for instance an elaboration of what was composed in
the tempera technique. Further still, it will elaborate some of the cultural factors especially with
the Roman Catholics that made them encourage the Christian art. One of them is; they wanted to
emphasize more on the Christian belief due to the reformation that had taken place. This had a
great effect in the Protestant churches. The project will also focus on other artworks in Italy and
Rome other than the paintings which had the religious theme.
