Research Proposal
Assignment 7: Did the Trump majority in Wisconsin
reflect the nation-wide trend of white working-class anger?
Donald Trump’s identified supporters, include a significant cohort of white American’s from
working-class and challenged socio-economic groups. The support base has been controversial,
because it has provided legitimacy to racism, and protests, rallies, and even hate crimes have risen
since Trump took office, and this is a significant indicator of anger.
WI has had a significant history of progressive politics. For many decades, WI has consistently
been more Democratic than Republican. Even the Green Bay Packers are the only co-operatively
owned professional football franchise. They are owned by the city. However, this progressive agenda
changed. An explanation of this shift will be analyzed by asking whether the change was a protest
against Hilary Clinton more than a vote in favour of Trump. Many Democrats did not even show up to
vote nation wide, and this was viewed as a protest. Did WI reflect this national trend, or, is there a state
specific political transformation that occurred which can only be understood by ‘local’ and not national
factors. What is at stake, is the greater understanding of the growing right. Will WI be a state that will
have growing racism and xenophobia? Will WI challenge these regressive views, and continue on their
historical path of progressive politics. The value of this research, extends toward anyone in WI
concerned about their political future, and for visible minorities, they are stakeholders in the sense their
own personal safety could be an issue. However, one of the important limitations of this study, will be
the establishment of a comprehensive overview of WI public attitudes. It is impossible to do primary
research, so this study will be limited by the amount of polls and how many citizens of WI these
attitudes reflect.
The knowledge that I bring to the project is actually pretty limited because I am new to WI. I
am interested in learning more about the state, but also concerned about racism. It is an issue that I find
repugnant, but also an issue that to me, is not a true reflection of American values and ideals.
Immigration and cultural diversity have always defined the backgrounds and history of US citizens.
Finally, my lack of direct experience in WI, actually provides a more objective stance in that I have no
pre-conceived bias toward the culture, region or politics.
The research agenda for the issue, will examine polling information both recently and through
the past decades of election. To this end, state data on voting results will be looked at, and also peerreviewed sources that analyze WI voting trends both recent, and over the long-term. Further, peer
reviewed analysis will look at demographics and racial attitudes in WI. Sources like Books, Academic
Journals, Magazines, Newspapers, and Websites are all sources that exclusively itemize peer reviewed
academic sources. Do trends in WI reflect national trends, and how are these trends actually defined.
The popular media will be looked at for sources reflecting either attitudes of the public, voting trends,
and how these issues have unfolded since the election of Trump. The agenda is to build a set of facts on
WI attitudes, to establish a theory that tries to predict future issues surrounding race, politics and
partisan support.
