Reality TV and Children’s Development
Should parents watch with their kids every program aired on television? Technology is
one of the emerging issues in the world which is showing a vast improvement. More especially
in the entertainment industry, there are so many programs which can be accessed via varieties of
media made available, thanks to technology. Reality TV has played a role in exposing children
and teenagers to obscene language, images, and violence. From Albert Bandura’s experiments,
children who get exposed to violent television programs develop a violent nature (Gentile, 2013).
This is true; most children try to behave just like their favorite celebrities in the reality shows
they get exposure to. Understanding childhood behaviors associated with watching reality shows
is crucial for a parent who is willing to nurture his child upright (Asamen and Berry, 2013).
Reality television programs entail showing people in different contexts, acting natural,
and most of them are about competitions. When scripting these shows, the primary objective is
to pass specific information to a particular target audience, and so, a given language is chosen
based on the age, location, and gender of the audience. When a message falls into the wrong
hands, then it is irrelevant since it has not achieved its purpose. This can be compared to letting
the children watch reality shows that contain obscene languages, words that are beyond them.
For instance, a reality show talking about early marriages or couples’ lifestyles, why should
children watch these shows? The language and the conflicts in the story will affect the
psychological development of a child (Davies, 2010). For example, if a child listened to the kind
of language used during a fight between a man and a woman, he/she will develop such a

language. It is natural that during arguments, there is always an exchange of abusive words,
words which should never be brought into the memories of kids.
The memory of a child is like an empty slate and is ready to accept any information fed to
it. Whichever information gets placed on it for the first time can stick for a long time than it does
for older people. This explains why it is much easier for children to learn foreign languages
faster than grownups in any situation. Graphic images and videos have the ability to stick in an
individual’s mind for longer than verbal communication due to the high power of persuasion.
Exposing children to reality television shows with obscene images, language and any form of
expression has the potential to change their whole personality. When observed, the way children
behave in modern society is not the way they used to a century ago since the media has played so
much in shaping what they think, think about, and what they do, for instance, when a child sees
her great celebrity in the reality show wearing a short or very tight dress that reveals her body
parts, she will develop the mentality that, that is the only way to be sexy and attract a man’s
attention.
When children watch violent reality shows, they become less sensitive to suffering and
pain. Due to this, they will not see any harm when fighting others since they get used to seeing it.
It becomes a regular thing in their life, such that if such a child saw other kids fighting, he will
react slowly in helping stop the fight. Violent scenes do not easily arouse them. Nevertheless,
children who watch violent reality shows develop a conflicting nature due to being used to
witnessing quarrels all the time (De, 2014). Being violence becomes part of their personality, and
as they grow, it becomes difficult to change them. Changing a grownup is difficult as compared
to a child.

Reality television shows are vital in the development of a child’s mental capability,
however, violence, obscene language, and images get to the children through these reality TV
shows, what should be done to reduce this? With technology advancing each day, it is difficult to
control what reaches a given audience; this means that parents cannot be able to fully control
what their children will watch at what time, where, and with whom. By using mobile phones,
laptops, among several other devices, the children will be able to access these reality television
shows. What should they do since it is their responsibility as parents to help the child grow with
the desired behavior? Most children will develop the way their parents want (Christakis and
Zimmerman, 2016). One of the best strategies will be to limit the time when the child is free (for
instance, when free, a parent can take the child to the playground where he can join kids of his
age for a game like soccer, hide and seek among several others). Limiting the child from
watching reality shows which have incidences of violence, strong language (such as sexual
language and content) will be an excellent way for controlling the child’s behavior.
