Critical Analysis of “My Last Duchess” by Robert Browning
Women are accessories to men in society. In the poem, “My Last Duchess” poet Robert
Browning explores the theme of male superiority to reveal the power of men during the 18th
century.
The first example of male superiority during the 18th century is the Duke is very
commanding and expects to be obeyed or else. The “or else factor” is being killed with no
remorse or consequences. The Duke was so insecure that he killed his last wife for smiling at the
most innocent things. According to Lance St. John Butler in his article, “My Last Duchess:
Overview” he states, “He chooses “never to stoop,” expects his wife to smile a special smile for
him and no one else, and, it dawns on us, murders her (“I gave commands;/Then all smiles
stopped together”) for what is almost a whim. Her offence is no one specific crime but a friendly
if bland personality that has irritated her husband by not pandering to his notion of his own
importance.”
Another example of male superiority in the 18th century is the Duke has to have full
control over women in order to feel dominate in a marriage. If he wants a woman to marry him,
she has no other choice than to accept the marriage and do everything he says. Not only does he
expect the wife to be submissive, but he expect a high dowry because his family is noble. In the
article, “The Browing-Howard connection” author Anthony Hecht states:
(1) The duke is a man of expensive tastes who will expect a dowry commensurate with
the distinction of his noble family, and (2) he will also expect nothing but absolute
submission and obedience from anyone he deigns to marry.
The last example of male superiority in the 18th century is the Duke wants to make it known
how powerful he is over his wives. He feels like he needs reassurance that he is as powerful as he
claims to be, so he restates his dominance by pointing out the picture of Neptune taming a
seahorse. This reassurance shows how his insecurity takes over and not only does he has to be
superior to his wife but to the envoy as well. Author B.R. Jerman states in his article,
“Browning’s Witless Duke”, “ When he begs his guest to ‘Notice Neptune–taming a sea horse,’
he further intimated how he had tamed and killed his last duchess.”
Poet Robert Browning successfully explored the theme of male superiority in the 18th
century within “My Last Duchess”.
