Reflect on the interrelated interconnection of your thoughts, emotions, decision-making models,
influences, and motivations and how it affects your thinking.
In Chapter 3 you examined the nature of human egocentrism in order to have a clearer
understanding. One of the advantages of a college education is to keep an open mind to
objectively and critically examine your beliefs and mindset while learning new academic
subjects. One goal is to be able to become as a civic-minded citizen.
Refer to Chapter 3 in Paul and Elder (Exhibit 3.2, p. 50) Reflect on “The Three Functions of the
Mind.”
Thinking
“You could not step twice into the same rivers; for other waters are ever flowing on to you.”
Heraclitus
Feeling
“The sun is new each day.” Heraclitus
Wanting
“The hidden harmony is better than the obvious.” Heraclitus
Keep in mind your personal relationship to your way of thinking. Asking the right questions is
essential in order to apply critical thinking to your academic, professional, and personal life.
Discussion Questions
How do you critically analyze academic content from your learning and determine what is
relevant to your career?
What is meant by the authors who state that we can now “study history as historical reasoning,
math by mathematical reasoning, and learn to think geographically, economically, biologically
and chemically?” Refer to Appendix A (p. 417).
Discussion question responses should be at least 150-200 words.
All learners should be prepared to critique the postings from at least two fellow students, but be
sure to back up your thoughts and feedback with concrete facts and insights based on research.
You may also want to cite other examples to support your position.
Include at least 1-2 scholarly sources that are not required or recommended readings for this
course. The CSU-Global Library is a good place to find these sources.
Format your discussion, including all in-text citations and references, according to the CSUGlobal Guide to Writing and APA.
Be sure to reach out to your instructor if you have questions about the assignment.
