Dear LLD 100A Portfolio Readers,
During this semester in LLD 100A class, I could improve my reading skill by reading the
textbook Writing Skill: Grammar and Sentence Structure by professor Ty Khuu. I had learned
discourse community and rhetorical strategies from this book and understood how important
them are in writing process. Besides, I was able to improve my writing and critical thinking skill
by finishing the two main assignments: the Rhetorical Analysis (RA) and the Discipline
Investigation (DI) and five reflection journals. I tried my best effort on both major assignments,
but, among these two essay, I would consider the Discipline Investigation assignment as my best
writing assignment, and the Rhetorical Analysis as my second best writing assignment.
I chose my DI paper as the best work because I could write quality content. The introduction part
of the DI paper is an excellent example of this. First of all, I explained what is accounting in the
first paragraph. Then, I further explained three reasons I chose accounting as my major, “I’ve
always had a flair for maths,” “I am a timid and quiet person” and “I love helping people”.
Another reason I believe the DI paper is my best work is that I used better development and
organization in my paper after I revised it several times. I also use outside sources in my DI
paper to support my point. For example, I used a quote from Karen S. Johnson’s article “Your
role in a large firm may also require many forms of communication” to support my point “as an
accountant, Helen has to communicate with everyone.”
My RA and DI papers did not organize and connect my supporting material, on the other hand,
these papers had some grammar errors and some sentences were not clear. After I asked for
feedback from Professor Khuu and the writing tutors, I fixed these problems to make a better
essay. In writing the DI paper, I was able to apply the four basic principles that I learned from
the textbook: Discover the point, develop the point with specific evidence, organize the
supporting evidence and revise it carefully. With the help of my professor, I can use the writing
skills in other courses. I am proud of my portfolio and I hope you can be pleased with it. Thank
