Work and Leisure
Work is a common activity which is done by human beings to achieve an income. These
activities can be in different forms which include mental and physical activities. The main
purpose of getting involved in these activities is to get an income to cater for living expenses.
Examples of these expenses can be food, shelter, and clothing. I also think that work involves
getting engaged into physical or mental activities or both, to achieve a set objective. For
example, I have had the chance to work in a restaurant as a cashier. My main duties were to
ensure that I kept into account daily sales and collected all the cash from the customers who used
different products and services from the restaurant. Working here involved both my mental and
physical activities. For instance, I would do some mathematics in keeping the sum of the cash
flowing in. Physical activities included carrying the cash from the restaurant offices to the safe,
and then to the bank. My main goal working as a cashier was to be promoted to be a branch
manager someday. Therefore, from my point of view, work is an activity which involves the use
of mental or physical strength to achieve a certain goal.
On the other hand, leisure can be described as an experience where an individual enjoys
freedom, such as spending free time away from one’s place of work. I think it is an experience
where a person is wholly motivated and psyched to do whatever they have always wanted to do.
Also, it is the time spent doing what people love, that is their hobbies, likes and or preferences.
This free time can be spent doing activities like swimming, boxing, going on a date, hiking, sky
diving, playing or watching soccer, etc. For instance, I have been able to engage myself in leisure
activities from time to time. During my last month’s leave, I considered skating on the Alps,
while at the same time experiencing the scenic view that nature provides. During this time, I was
able to experience timelessness and fulfillment of my desires and wants. I felt motivated to skate
as it is one of my hobbies.
In conclusion, I think leisure is free time off work, where a person has the opportunity to
experience what they have always wanted to. Also, it is the time where people feel intrinsically
motivated to do what they love.
Being a Saudi Arabian who has moved around the world, I must say that there are
certain situations where I have found myself at the position of ‘object’ of work and also there
have been instances where I have found myself at the position of the ‘subject’ of work. All of
these instances have given an exposure of different phases for which man has been created to
operate in here on earth. The understanding of the position dominion that man was created for,
also unveils the instances in which man is granted the mandate to act responsibly while
subduing the earth.
In my personal life, I have experienced times that made me feel like a subject of work.
Working as an attendant in Saudi Arabia where I had to attend to the needs of the customers
and provide them with the necessary services I felt very subjective to my position of work. I
was also being headed by supervisors who would accept nothing but excellence when it comes
to performance. I, therefore, trained myself to act responsibly according to my job descriptions
and to ensure that I meet the set standards. In that position, I was able to and function well as
a ‘subject’ of work. Then, I did not have a choice of what to do and what not to do but rather
do as instructed by my seniors. I was not one of my best times, but at least it taught me the side
being a subject of work.
My stay in Canada gave me a different position as far as being a ‘subject’ of work, or
‘object’ of work is concerned. I was able to choose for myself what I was interested in doing.
During the stay, I embarked on studying a career that I believed would help me become a great
business person. I would then be able to do what I chose at my convenience.
A reflection on Pope John Paul I I’s life experiences and how they effected his papacy
Among the popes who have been in existence, John Paul II stands out to be the second
long serving pope in history. He was also referred to as blessed John Paul or John Paul the Great.
He was an amazing pope and traveled in many countries over the world. He was born on the
18th-day of May 1920 in the Wadowice Republic of Poland. His impressive papacy life begun
in October 1978 and during this time, he served the Catholic Church up to April 2nd, 2005 when

During his papacy life, he visited one hundred and twenty-nine countries. His main aim
was a call for holiness among Catholic believers. The visits displayed his modest character, and
many people tried to abandon evil deeds and ventured in living holy lives. People become more
familiarized with the Catholic doctrine; this resulted to the doctrine being strengthened and
attractive to many people from other dominions. He beatified and canonized many people during
the visits, an action which made his papacy life more famous.
Being an influential leader during the 20th century, he aided in abolishing the communist

Passion can be defined as a powerful emotion. Such emotions may comprise joy, love,
anger, or hatred. As a result, it can drive individuals to do their best in life, or worse off, drive
them to do the most despicable things in life. I believe the idea of passion is an important thing in
our lives on earth as it drives one in achieving life goals. To a great extent, passion is significant
in the determination of human behavior. I cannot imagine a life that is passionless as, without it,
human life can be likened to that of an emotionless plant. I am equally conscious of the fact that it
can play an important role in our lives as well as guide us always.
Unfortunately, not always do our passions lead us towards great feats. For example, there
are some of us who are affected by the passion for material things forcing them to do things which
cannot be considered moral or ethical such as crime. I think such passions can hardly be regarded
as truly great passions but are rather primitive instincts as opposed to passion. However, there are
perfect examples of true passions that have really contributed towards people’s personal
development at the same time making them feel really significant persons and have meaningful
lives.
Passion can, therefore, be described as a distinct character but which not everybody has the
opportunity of experiencing. It can be said that when a person has passion, that person is full of
enthusiasm and is driven by it. It is for this reason therefore that I personally believe that Passion
is expressed in different ways, as well as in different situations. While the dictionary defines the
word “passion” differently, what is common is the reference to it as a powerful emotion, such as
hatred, love, anger, or happiness. This is why it is possible for a person to be happy, but if the
person is passionately happy, then the meaning of “happiness” is taken to a new level. This is why
it is equally possible for an individual to “fly into a passion,” to mean experiencing intense emotion
and rage. This is what the television series “Passions” is based on including all such emotions, thus
using its title in all its episodes aired.
The alternate definition for “passion” revolves much on its powerful connotation of the
emotion of love. It is used to express the idea of undying love, lust, and or sexual desire. A love
relationship is described as passionate to mean the partners are deeply and madly in love. An
individual is described as “passionate” when is very enthusiastic, motivated, and full of life.
Organizations in the advertising industry will always be headhunting for passionate persons to
recruit as their enthusiasm will affect the decisions of potential customer positively in favor of the
organization. This notion has been captured aptly in a paraphrase to F.M. Foster’s words to the
effect that one individual with a passion is far much better in comparison to forty others who are
just interested. Therefore, passion can be viewed as an object of a person’s enthusiasm. This is
why if an activity or item becomes the “passion” of an individual, it turns out to be a part of that
individual as opposed to just being something they like doing or having.
As an individual, I feel I am passionate about many things but significant among them is
volunteering and helping those in need. When I look back at my past, I have always involved
myself in pursuit of helping others as I have a feeling of being responsible for individuals around
me. Growing up as a child, I was always taking care of my younger sister and on growing up, I
started thinking of my place and contribution to my society as I tried to and to find my life’s
purpose. When I reflect on that past, I have come to realize that that was a formation period of my
identity but also a time that my true passion of helping others started dominating the development
of my personality. In my early schooling, my passion found a place in helping fellow students and
when I joined high school, I was involved in tutoring and peer mentoring other students from
disadvantaged areas. It was a passionate calling as I took it as my responsibility helps such students
as I understood that I had something I could share with them.
My passion in life is driven by the desire to do the best as well as making the best out of
all experiences. This is buttressed by the fact that my life is full of many things involving endurance
of passion. Thus, the maintenance of the drive is only an obstacle that I have to contend with as I
realize that school is one place where there are many activities taking place daily. Each of them is
full of some new task or drama that requires being taken care of. Such tasks though seemingly
mundane such as finding a transport back home for some students, homework, appearance, test,
and issues of self-esteem.
The passion I have is also driven by the realization that in order to get through with this
life, one needs to excel by getting good grades in school. As a result, I have the drive of waking
up early in the morning as I look forward to the intercourse I will enjoy with my friends and the
school community in general throughout the day, everyone can make it. The realization that there
are those out there who are gifted in academics but have no chance of excelling has seen me helping
them by tutoring. This is the reason why I embarked on tutoring them resulting to it becoming a
passion.
As a result, I personally feel the passion has brought about great satisfaction in my life as
I experienced how useful my help has been and the students need it. This experience has really
brought about new emotions in my life as well as making it become more purposeful to live. It has
been as a result of others that I have come to understand how I can contribute to improving my
own life and also for those who need help. The passion has equally opened my eyes to things that
we normally take for granted such as poverty and that positive impact I make in someone’s life
goes a long in justifying my existence and gift of life.
In summation, I have also come to the realization that for my passion to be really effective
in the lives of others, I need higher education as volunteering alone will never be enough as the
society needs fundamental structural changes to enable any help to members of the public in need
not be out mere passion of some volunteers, but to be institutionalized in our social life.
