2. Short Answer Questions
Answer all three (3) of the following
in coherent paragraphs (NOT bullet points). Be sure to indicate the question
letter on your answer sheet(s). Worth twenty (20) points each.
A. Explain the apocalyptic way of thinking and its understanding of history, as well
as how the belief in resurrection plays a role in this way of thinking. Next,
indicate how Paul adapts this general way of thinking to his faith in Christ Jesus.
Finally, provide a schematic drawing which illustrates Paul’s interpretation.
B. What is the significance of the collection Paul is taking up?
C. Briefly describe the suffering that Paul had experienced in his missionary work
and his understanding of that suffering.
3. Synthetic Essay Question
Worth twenty (20) points
We began the course by looking at the Roman Catholic approach to understanding the
Scriptures, which critiqued fundamentalism and affirmed a more historical approach to
the texts. Demonstrate how this approach was followed for each of the major parts of the
New Testament literature surveyed in this course, both in general as well as in ways that
are specific to each of the four sections:
I.
The Gospels;
II.
The Acts of the Apostles;
III.
Paul and his Undisputed Letters; and
IV.
The Book of Revelation
There is a part of a chapter in the Study Bible on Considerations for Contextual
Interpretation (pp 107-109) that might help you focus your thoughts on this question.
The question is clear: how did the class look at each of the groups of texts in the New
Testament in the light of historical criticism, yet still acknowledge the texts as the living
Word of God for today?
4. Final, Major Essay Question
Worth forty (40) points
Please answer on a separate sheet of paper with your name on the back.
Analyze Philemon 15-17, comparing and contrasting it to Galatians 3:27-28, as well as to
1 Cor 12:12-13 and to Rom 10:12.
Be sure, in your analysis, to answer these questions:
What is the context and situation of the letter?
What did Paul write to Philemon concerning Onesimus?
What did Paul NOT write?
Why?
Furthermore, explain what Paul MEANS in Philemon 15-17, and WHY.
A good essay will have an opening paragraph, at least two paragraphs of body, and a
concluding paragraph.
