ASTHMA MANAGEMENT AND CONTROL
2
In the United States, one in every 13 people has asthma, one of the leading causes of illness
and disability (Price et al, 2014). Failure to control asthma imposes a significant burden on both
the patients and health care systems. Considering the prevalence and associated burden of asthma,
it is crucial to obtain an optimal control of the disease. To achieve the control, a multidisciplinary
integrative approach is critical which involves but not limited to health education, health
promotion information, strategies and asthma action plan that are the key focus of the essay.
It is the role of the health care provider to provide health education to the patients. Proving
health education especially among asthmatic patients empowers them with skills, knowledge, and
confidence that they require for asthma control. Most asthmatic rigorous studies indicate that selfmanagement education for asthma is more efficient in improving asthma outcomes (Cabana et al,
2014). Some of the essential components of asthma education include the rationales and methods
for avoiding allergens and irritants that may lead to inflammatory reactions in asthmatic patients.
The other one would involve description on the correct use and side effects of asthmatic
medications which should go hand in hand with the demonstration of inhaler technique. While
working with asthmatic patients every day, I noticed they don’t use properly the inhaler, based on
this education is very crucial. An explanation concerning the criteria and actions to take when the
condition deteriorates would also be essential. Lastly, it would also be necessary to include
asthmatic education concerning intolerance to sulfites and acetylsalicylic acid, some asthmatic
patients are sensitive to aspirin and aspirin-like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug at some point
of their life. A detailed discussion on these asthmatic education topics will empower the patients
to understand the condition better thereby prompting successful management of the disease
(Cabana et al, 2014).

Providing health promotion information to asthmatic patients is also another important step
that can help in minimizing asthma attacks. The most crucial health promotion information to
asthmatic patients would include how to avoid asthmatic triggers such as staying away from dust,
cats and dogs. It would also involve information concerning exercise where the patient will be
advised to use prescribed medications before doing any exercises to prevent attacks and be always
ready to stop any form of exercises at the first sign of asthma attack. The other concept that needs
to be covered under health promotion information is lifestyle changes that would focus on
behavioral changes such as cleanliness to avoid cockroaches, avoid smoking and proper ventilation
for quality air which are factors that trigger asthma attack (Price et al, 2014). A complete list of
medications used on a regular basis like the bronchodilators, inhaled steroids along with the rescue
medication or inhaler, and any anaphylaxis treatment must be readily available.
Health promotion and education about asthma aims at altering patients’ behavior rather
and providing knowledge to control the disease (Cabana et al, 2014). The diverse range of
strategies and methods should be used to better impact on the asthmatic patients. Some of which
include individual teachings, small-group sessions, checklists, problem-solving sessions and
repeated audits. The strategy to use highly depends on the choice of the treating physician and the
understanding capability of the patient. Problem-solving sessions and individual teachings would
be the most effective strategies to use in a hospital-based setting.
Asthma action plans have also proved to be efficient in managing the condition and
improving patient health outcomes (Gupta, Wan, Hall, & Straus, 2012). In fact, it is crucial that all
asthmatic patients should have an asthma action plan. In case the victim is a child all the caregivers
should also be knowledgeable with the action. An asthma action plan is a written document that

contains a plan developed by a physician and a patient to help control asthma conditions. The plan
should include the daily treatment such as the type of medications. It should also contain a
description of how to control asthma on long-term basis. A plan on how to deal with worsening
asthma conditions or attack should be included in the plan (Gupta, Wan, Hall, & Straus, 2012).
Also, there should be an explanation of the cases when to call a doctor or go to emergency rooms.
In conclusion, despite asthma being a chronic respiratory condition, it can be significantly
controlled through a multi integrative approach from the patients, caregivers, and the healthcare
providers.
