The first step is to come up with a topic and write a thesis statement, a discussion of which you
can Google and it’s on many websites for colleges and universities. One source I like for this
purpose is the University of Chapel Hill at NC, another for guidelines about academic writing in
general is OWL at Purdue. I also suggest that you visit the Reference Librarians at the library
who are always there to help you find sources as well. You can write about a film or two, a
genre, a decade we’ve studied, and use only our texts and the many articles and other sources
I’ve placed on BB Content. If you need further information, the library databases can be
explored for thousands of sources. But I will not accept a paper that uses only websites, most
of which are not academic and useful for college courses.
You can write about one film at length but you must state something important about that film
and provide evidence to support your claim. You my also compare two films we saw in class or
are on the list of required/recommended outside films. Another possible subject is examining
one genre such as film noir (Murder, My Sweet, Out of the Past, Double Indemnity, Crossfire,
etc.), classic drama (The Best Years of Our Lives, On the Waterfront, Black Fury, Guess Who’s
Coming to Dinner), or Pre-Code films. For example, how does Platoon represent the Vietnam
War? Or compare the nature of interracial marriage in Guess Who’s with what we know about
it today. What has changed? Is this generation more or less receptive to understanding such
marriages? Consider too that we examined labor relations in a number of films and you can
create a thesis statement about how these films show labor-union-management problems
since the early 1900s.
The paper will be devoted to critical academic (scholarly) research, 11-12 pages in
MLA format or another style you have followed in your major, adhering to sound
research methods and practices. I expect that this paper will be concise, sharply
focused on one subject with a fair degree of cogency, and accurately referenced
wherever citations are necessary. We will discuss potential topics in class for each
paper. All papers must be double-spaced with only your name and course title and
section at the top left of the first page; number all pages. I will not accept any paper that
features only websites as sources and I insist on the use of your texts; academic, peerreviewed journal articles; and other books, periodicals, and newspapers, and then
websites that you can authenticate as scholarly in nature, factually accurate, and
credible and verifiable sources for this course.
Some of the suggested movies:
1- Let There Be Light – 1946 (
2- he Birth of a Nation (1915 film by D.W Griffith)
3- The General (1926) – Original piano score by William P. Perry

5- Nanook of the North
6- The Great Dictator – Charlie Chaplin – 1940
7- Buster Keaton – Our Hospitality 1923
