This is a research paper – there should be no quotes within the body of the paper
UNLESS you
o are directly quoting someone’s opinion. !ll information that you obtain from
your references
o should be reworded using your own words as well as cited within the body
of the paper. Failure to properly cite within the body of the paper (giving
credit to the authors of your references) will result in a grade deduction of
20% of the possible paper grade (3 points)!
First part due today Outline of paper:
Your paper should include the following parts to make a cohesive research paper;
remember to transition between all of these parts, not just jump from one thing to the
next:
Introduction: What will you be writing about? Why is it important? How does this
scientific idea relate back to your life?
Body: The body of this paper has a number of parts: Literature review – what is the
scientific basis for the experiment? What was your hypothesis? How does science
support your hypothesis? What has been done in the past for these types of studies.
(This section should be about 3 pages of your overall paper). Experiment – How was
the experiment performed? What did we do and why did we do it? What were the exact
steps? What materials did we use? Results – What were all of our findings? How can
we use this data to form our conclusions? Did we have to find something out from the
data we collected?
Conclusion: This should summarize what you discussed in your paper. We want to
relate our results back to our hypothesis to form a scientific conclusion. Restate your
thesis and the main support and have a concluding statement.
The second part due today Literature Review:

This is a draft of the literature review portion of your paper. Using the references
you found how do you support what we did in the experiment. This should be
between 2-3 pages at minimum. (Remember this should be 3 pages of your final
paper)

Laboratory Report
Introduction
When referring to the way human activities can contaminate the soil, the options are
many and very varied. It is essential to maintain a healthy soil in order to support agriculture as
most of the products we eat are coming from the soil. Because of that is very important to be able
to protect it in order to be able to raise plants and the first step we have to do is to understand
what substance can contaminate it and what will be the effect. For today’s laboratory, we are
going to conduct an experiment regarding the ph level of the soil and determine how it is going
to be changed when we add different substances. The ph value determines if a substance is
acidic ( a value under 7 ), neutral ( a value that equals 7 ) or alkaline ( a value over 7). There are
several signs which indicate that the soil is damaged and the following are just a few examples:
the soil drainage is poor, many predatory insects, many weeds, dry and cracked areas and many
water pools on the surface of it.
Hypothesis
For today’s experiment, we are going to test the way a chosen liquid interacts with the ph
of the soil. This simulates the effect of human activities and for that, we are going to use nontoxic common substances such as orange juice. At the end of the experiment, I expect to see a
decrease in the ph value of the tested soil that will confirm that indeed human activity affects the
soil.

Methods
The following materials are required in order to be able to conduct this experiment : 1
(one) soil sample , 1 (one ) clean spoon , 2 (two) small cups , ph paper ( known as ph strips),
timer ( the one available on mobile devices can be used ), duct tape , 1 (one ) coffee filter. We
are going to being the experiment by determining the ph value of orange juice. In order to do
this, we will pour it into a cup and then use the ph strip to measure it. In order to do this, is is
required to dip the ph strip into the liquid, wait a few seconds and then compare the obtained
color with the color scale available on the packing.Once we obtained the value we are going to
record it in the notebook. For the next step we are going to add orange juice together with the soil
in the same glass and stir it vigorously and after that, we should let the sample sit for around 45
(forty-five) minutes. During this time we can prepare the runoff filtering container by adding the
coffee filter on top of the empty cup and fixating it with the duct tape. After the 45 (forty-five )
minutes passed we should pour the component in the glass with the coffee filter and wait for it to
fill the glass. Once it is done we can remove the duct tape. We should take a new ph strip,
measure this time the ph value of the new substance and note it in the chat.

Based on the given information we know that the ph of the soil we are using in this experiment is
7, which means it is a natural soil. After using the ph strips to test the orange juice we concluded
it is an acid because it has a value of 4. After mixing the two components together we obtained a
value of 4 on our ph scale which means that it is acid. This shows us that the orange juice
influenced its value.
Discussion
Based on the completed chart, we can state the hypothesis we presented in the beginning
of this laboratory report is correct and the substance we used changed the ph of the soil we
tested. It shows us that using an acidic substance such as orange juice will change the neutral ph
value to an acidic one which can seriously affect the health of the plant. There are myths stating
that feeding the soil with orange juice might make it more fertile, but this experiment shows us
that citrus juice might be just too acid for it. It would be interesting conducting an experiment
where we test the way a plant reacts to only orange juice as the main source of nutrients in
comparison with water and with orange juice diluted with water and mixed well. As a conclusion
of today’s experiment, we can say that human activities definitely interfere with the health of the
soil and we should be more careful regarding what substances we use as it might have severe
consequences on its fertility.
