Textbook: Strategic Staffing
Background Information
A job description is a written description of the duties and responsibilities of a job. A person
specification summarizes the characteristics of someone able to perform the job well. Based on
the job description, the person specification profiles the personal skills, qualifications, abilities,
and experiences the organization needs to evaluate candidates during the recruitment and
selection process (Phillips & Gully, 2015, p.110)
Instructions
1. Read Chapter 4, “Strategic Job Analysis and Competency Modeling,” in the Strategic

at the beginning of the chapter, and the concluding summary vignette by the same
title at the end of the chapter.
b. Describe how you would conduct a job analysis or create a competency model
differently for two types of jobs—systems engineers and a more static, lowerskilled job such as a cashier or mail sorter.
c. How would the process differ for the two jobs?
d. Would you use different sources of information for the two jobs? Why or why
not? What sources of information would you use for each job?
3. Provide a detailed post that demonstrates clear, insightful critical thinking. Your initial
posting should be 200-300 words long.
4. Your initial posting is to include, at a minimum, two sources properly cited and
referenced: (a) the Strategic Staffing textbook and (b) an academic journal article that is
at least 3-5 pages in length and published within the last 3-5 years.
5. Post your initial discussion by the end of the fourth day of the workshop.
6. Also conduct a critical analysis of postings by two of your classmates by the end of the
workshop.
7. Your discussion response should discuss your classmate’s posting and be written as if
you were reviewing his or her posting in an academic journal. Your discussion response
should therefore answer the following questions as applicable:
a. Was your classmate’s reasoning articulate and logical? Were the facts correct?
b. Was the interpretation your classmate provided reasonable and consistent with
experts in the field? Did your classmate defend the choices effectively?
8. The focus for your critical analysis is not whether or not you agree with your classmate,
but how well his or her position was presented.
9. Each response should be 200-300 words in length and to include, at a minimum, two
sources properly cited and referenced: (a) the Strategic Staffing textbook and (b) an
academic journal article that is at least 3-5 pages in length and published within the last
