The city where you live is planning an STD education campaign specifically targeting
local high schoolers on the dangers of these diseases. Ideas are needed on how to make
this campaign effective. What ideas would you suggest?
1) Needs Assessments: In order to find the exact need to focus on within STD’s a needs
assessment need to be set up. A needs assessment is where you take the wanted
conditions and the much needed conditions to determine what the actual needs is for the
city or school, etc. In this case the needs assessment could be which particular STD is
more common in the high schoolers in this city. The people ahead of the campaign can
focus the majority of their time on that STD, but making sure they inform students of the
other STD’s as well.
2) STD Statistics: Statistics is very important when it comes to planning any event to
reduce certain behaviors. Individuals in the campaign can get information on how many
high school students in that city (or school to narrow it down more) had an STD. The
breakdown will also include the percentage of each student with that STD, their gender,
and each grade level from ninth through twelve grade. Each student should receive this
sheet to see the relevance of STD’s throughout the local high schools.
3) Activity Interaction: Activities or games are huge learning essentials. There should
be at least five games, but up to 10 different games for the students; which should be
facilitated by college students in the health field. Students will have fun playing the
games, but will learn the information as well. I have noticed students retain information
faster if they get the information from someone around their age and from games versus
listening for someone talking about STD’s for an hour.
4) Incentives for students: I think incentives such as pens, lip balm and healthy candy
should be provided for students. In addition, if the students go to all of the tables and get
it signed by the facilitator they could be in a raffle to win bigger prizes, such as gift cards
and book vouchers. The incentives will make the students want to participant in the
activities. The sheet should also provide spaces so students can write down three or more
things they have learned about STD’s.
5) Educational Aspect: The educational aspect is very important. The campaign should
show the seriousness of STD’s in that city’s high schools. It should also educate the
students on how to prevent contracting an STD and how important it is to get tested.
Their will also be information on birth control and how to properly put on a condom.
6) Condom Distribution: I think it is important to hand out condoms at the campaign
because some students are already engaging in sexual intercourse. If they are engaging in
sexual intercourse we want them to do so safely. If the students receive condoms the
chances of them using condoms during intercourse increases, which would hopefully
reduce the number of STD’s in high schoolers.
7) Sexual Health Organizations: The sexual health organizations will bring awareness
to what resources the students have available to them. I think Planned Parenthood and
HIV testing should be available to students during the campaign. This way the students
will get information about what Planned Parenthood is and what they do as well as
learning how to go about getting an HIV test.
